How long is the NHS ADHD assessment waiting list in Birmingham?
Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust reports that children currently wait at least 19 months for an ADHD assessment, followed by at least 8 further months to receive the diagnosis — around 27 months in total from referral. For adults, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust reported over 1,200 people on its adult ADHD waiting list. Our private service has no waiting list.
Is NHS Right to Choose available for ADHD assessment in Birmingham?
Partly. NHS Birmingham and Solihull ICB has asked a number of independent Right to Choose providers to temporarily pause new ADHD and autism assessment bookings until the end of the financial year. Referrals are still accepted onto waiting lists, but those providers are not offering new appointment dates. NHS providers and Right to Choose providers who have not paused continue to accept referrals as usual.
How much does a private ADHD assessment cost in Birmingham?
Our ADHD diagnostic assessment for children and adults is £1,000 paid in full, or from £334 across three monthly payments with Klarna, with Clearpay also available. A combined ADHD and autism assessment is £2,250 paid in full, or from £563 across four monthly payments at 0% with PayPal Credit. Pricing is fixed and includes the full diagnostic pathway and written report.
Do I need a GP referral for a private ADHD assessment?
No. You can self-refer directly to our Birmingham service — no GP referral is required. We will request your consent to share your report with your GP afterwards to support continuity of care and any future shared care arrangement.
Where does the assessment take place — in person or online?
Both options are available. Assessments can be carried out in person at our Brindley Place clinic in Birmingham city centre, or online via secure video, whichever suits you better. Online assessments follow exactly the same clinical process and carry the same diagnostic weight.
How long does an ADHD assessment take?
The diagnostic assessment itself typically takes between two and four hours, depending on the complexity of your presentation. Including pre-assessment questionnaires, multi-disciplinary review and report writing, the full process usually completes within two to six weeks of your first appointment.
Is a private ADHD diagnosis recognised by the NHS, schools and employers?
Yes. Our diagnoses are made by GMC-registered consultant psychiatrists who are members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, using DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 criteria and NICE guideline NG87. Our English services are CQC regulated. Reports are accepted by the NHS, Birmingham and Solihull schools for EHCP and SEN planning, employers, universities and the DWP.
Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD for the first time?
Yes. Many of our adult patients are diagnosed for the first time in their 20s, 30s, 40s or later. ADHD is frequently missed in childhood, particularly in girls and in people whose inattentive symptoms were mistaken for daydreaming, anxiety or lack of effort. An adult diagnosis often explains lifelong patterns that never made sense before.
What happens if I am diagnosed with ADHD?
You receive a full written diagnostic report and a feedback session explaining the findings. If you wish to explore treatment, we provide ADHD treatment and medication management at the same Birmingham clinic — so you are not referred elsewhere and do not join another waiting list.
Do you assess both ADHD and autism?
Yes. ADHD and autism frequently co-occur, and we assess both within a single consultant-led pathway at our Birmingham clinic. The combined assessment at £2,250 covers both conditions and costs less than booking each separately.
