Autism Assessment Dundee

Private autism assessment and diagnosis for adults, teenagers and children living in Dundee, Angus, Perth and the wider Tayside region — led by GMC-registered consultant psychiatrists, delivered online or in person at our Edinburgh and Glasgow clinics, with no NHS waiting list.

What is a Private Autism Assessment?

A private autism assessment is a comprehensive clinical evaluation carried out by a consultant psychiatrist to determine whether an individual meets the diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The assessment examines social communication, sensory processing, behavioural patterns and developmental history against internationally recognised standards including DSM-5-TR and ICD-11.

For patients in Dundee and across Tayside, assessments are delivered either online via secure video or in person at our Edinburgh clinic (the closest to Dundee, around 90 minutes away) or our Glasgow clinic. Every assessment is delivered by consultant psychiatrists with specialist expertise in adult and child neurodevelopmental conditions, follows SIGN 145 clinical guidelines, and uses validated tools such as the ADOS-2, ADI-R and DISCO. You receive a formal diagnostic report recognised by employers, schools and NHS Scotland for shared care purposes.

Why Many Dundee Patients Choose a Private Assessment

NHS Tayside is currently under significant pressure for neurodevelopmental assessments. According to NHS Tayside's own Freedom of Information disclosures, there are more than 843 adults on the Tayside Adult Autism Consultancy Team (TAACT) waiting list, and in March 2025 NHS Tayside CAMHS announced it would no longer accept new neurodevelopmental referrals for children without a co-existing mental health condition.

For families and adults in Dundee who need answers sooner — whether for workplace adjustments, education support, mental health planning or simple self-understanding — a private autism assessment provides a clinically rigorous diagnosis without years of waiting.

Autism Assessment Dundee — Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the NHS autism assessment waiting list in Dundee?

According to NHS Tayside Freedom of Information data, more than 843 adults are currently on the Tayside Adult Autism Consultancy Team (TAACT) waiting list, and median adult waits in Tayside are among the longest in Scotland. For children, NHS Tayside CAMHS announced in March 2025 that it would no longer accept new neurodevelopmental referrals without a co-existing mental health condition. Our private service has no waiting list.

How much does a private autism assessment cost for Dundee patients?

Our private autism assessment is £1,500 paid in full, or available on a monthly payment plan from £375 per month. The fee includes the full diagnostic pathway and your written report. If you'd like both autism and ADHD assessed together, a combined assessment is £1,950 pay-in-full or £487 per month — more cost-effective than booking each separately.

Where do Dundee patients have their assessment carried out?

Patients living in Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross, and the wider Tayside region can be assessed online via secure video, or in person at our Edinburgh clinic on Charlotte Street, or our Glasgow clinic on Bath Street. Edinburgh is the closest in-person option to Dundee — around 90 minutes by car or direct train.

Do I need a GP referral for a private autism assessment?

No. You can self-refer directly to our Dundee service. We will, however, request your consent to liaise with your GP to ensure continuity of care and to support shared care arrangements after diagnosis.

Is a private autism diagnosis recognised by NHS Tayside and schools?

Yes. Our diagnoses are provided by GMC-registered consultant psychiatrists who are members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, using DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 criteria and SIGN 145 standards. Reports are accepted by NHS Scotland, Dundee schools, employers and the DWP.

Can adults be diagnosed with autism for the first time?

Absolutely. A large proportion of our adult patients in Dundee are diagnosed for the first time in their 20s, 30s, 40s or later. This is particularly common in women and individuals with strong masking abilities, whose autistic traits were not recognised in childhood.

Do you assess both autism and ADHD?

Yes. Autism and ADHD frequently co-occur, and our clinic is one of the few in Tayside that can assess both within a single consultant-led pathway. This is often more efficient and cost-effective than seeing two separate providers.

Are assessments available online or only in person?

Both. Many adult assessments can be conducted securely over video for patients across Dundee, Angus, Perthshire and Fife. In-person assessments are recommended for children and for cases where direct observation is clinically essential.

How long does the autism assessment process take?

From your first appointment to receiving the written report, the full process typically takes between two and six weeks, depending on your availability for clinical sessions and how quickly informant information can be gathered.
